Team Supercrew has become a big part of our family over the last week.
After receiving an email from James’ first-grade teacher followed by a call from his principal, I was honestly at a loss. It wasn’t the first sign that James might need some additional support, but it was definitely the flashing red sign that told me I needed to try something different.
I’ve recently been on my own journey as well. After being a full-time working mom for my kids’ entire lives, I took a work hiatus, found an amazing therapist, and have been incorporating CBT into my everyday life. It has been incredibly helpful for me, and I started wondering how I could introduce some of those same concepts to James in a way that actually made sense to a six-year-old.
My 11-year-old daughter is incredibly vocal about everything. What she did, how she feels, what happened at school, you name it, I know about it.
James is the complete opposite.
He doesn’t talk much about his feelings or what is going on inside his head. For a long time, I chalked it up to boys and girls simply being different. But after that call from school, I realized I needed to help him find a way to express some of the things he clearly wasn’t able to put into words yet.
Somehow I stumbled across Team Supercrew. I ordered the four-book set, and at about 7:30 Saturday night, right before bed, we opened the box.
Of the hundreds of books my kids have accumulated over the years, these are some of the most enjoyable books I can remember reading to them as a parent. And I honestly didn’t realize how much that mattered until I started reading Team Supercrew.
James loves being read to, so I wasn’t surprised that he was interested. What I wasn’t expecting was the legitimate sparkle in his eyes while I was reading, especially in those moments when Team Supercrew acknowledges the feeling he is having and then shifts toward all of the amazing things that could happen next.
We have read all four books every single day since they arrived.
I also spoke with James’ absolutely AMAZING first-grade teacher, and we made an agreement with James: if he has a great week at school and at home, he gets to pick one Team Supercrew stuffy.
And apparently Team Supercrew is already making its way into our everyday life. As we were walking into soccer today, I was talking to James about how he could handle a situation if he got angry. I told him he just needed to think of Chloe.
His response?
“How will Chloe help me in soccer?!?”
Thank you for writing the books I wish I had found years ago, but am incredibly grateful I found now.
I truly want other parents who might be sitting where I was last Friday, completely at a loss, to find these books.
Thank you for creating something that makes it easier for parents to help their kids understand what is happening inside their own heads.
You’ve made a difference in our house already, and we’ve only been using Team Supercrew for a week.
With gratitude,
