What Are SOS Cards?

SOS cards are designed to help during those big-emotion moments that can feel overwhelming for you and your child.

They’re like a superhero tool kit for emotions!

Each card guides you through a simple 4-step process that can be applied to any situation where feelings like anger, frustration, excitement, worry, fear, sadness, or even bursts of energy are running high.

When to Use SOS Cards

During calm moments

The best time to introduce SOS cards is during calm moments. Make it fun! After reading a Team Supercrew book, take turns picking an SOS card and practicing together.

Explore your favorites and plan how you’ll use them when those big feelings pop up.

During big feelings

When those SOS (big feelings) moments happen, you or your child can choose a favorite card to do together. If your child isn’t ready to join right away, that’s okay. Stay calm, offer comfort, and wait until they’re ready.

How to Use SOS Cards

Follow the steps on each card:

Step 1

Recognize the Emotion

Help your child name what they’re feeling. For example, you might say:

“I can see you’re really frustrated.”
Step 2

Understand the Emotion

If they’re unsure why they’re feeling that way, gently guide them. For example:

“It seems like you’re feeling frustrated because it’s time to clean up.”
Step 3

Regulate the Emotion

This is where the magic happens! Use the tools and strategies on the card to help manage the feeling. Keep in mind, kids might not be ready to jump into Step 3 right away, and that’s okay. Offer comfort, support, and a safe space until they are ready.

You can even model the strategy yourself. It’s powerful for kids to see grown-ups using emotional regulation tools too!

Step 4

Check In

Check in with your child to see how they’re feeling. They may want to continue with the current activity, pick a new card, or try again later. All options are okay.

Helpful Tips

Tips for grown-ups
  • If a card doesn’t work the first time, don’t worry. Try a different one and revisit it later. Emotional regulation takes practice, and most grown-ups are still learning too!
  • Over time, your family will get the hang of these steps. Kids will find their favorite cards and tools they love to use again and again.
  • Don’t worry about sticking to the suggested age groups. Use whatever works best for your family.
